Steve Nelson is a financial advisor and investment advisor representative for Prime Capital Investment Advisors (PCIA). He is also a registered representative with Private Client Services, Member FINRA/SIPC.
Passionate about doing what is best for his clients, Steve earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) designation to help ensure he remains on the leading edge of industry best interest practices. Holding FINRA Series 7, 6, 22, 63 and 65 registrations as well as his life & health insurance license allows him to provide various levels of service and strategies depending on individual client circumstances, whether it’s asset management or financial planning or qualified retirement plan management for a business or corporation.

“I believe I’m different from other advisors because rather than just focus on investments or asset management, I focus on long-term relationships and putting all the pieces together that I feel will lead to a client’s ultimate financial success. Financial planning for individuals can be complex and important to understand their entire financial situation before making recommendations. It requires a lot of work, it includes budgeting to achieve short- and long-term milepost objectives, and ultimately includes retirement income planning based on the client’s desired retirement lifestyle,” Steve says. “For corporate executives and business owners, the right kind of qualified retirement plan—whether it’s a 401(k) or SIMPLE IRA or another type of group plan based on their structure and goals—can help them save for their own retirements in a tax-advantaged manner while rewarding and retaining top employee talent. It’s a win-win. Prime Capital has deep experience and qualifications in group retirement plan management—we have three ERISA attorneys on staff and an entire “Financial Fitness for Life” employee education division.” Steve works with many types of organizations, including a number of nonprofits, a university and a large construction company. In Steve’s work with individuals and businesses, he relies heavily on Prime Capital Investment Advisors’ team of experts. “I am like a quarterback for my clients. Our investment committee manages over $10 billion in assets so I can provide clients access to incredible strategic resources when it comes to asset management and qualified plan management. I also work in tangent with a team member who is a full-time CFP® (Certified Financial Planner™). When a client wants only a financial plan or a review of their current retirement plan, we can provide that on a fee basis. I’m incredibly proud of our processes and the team we have in-house. I can work with my clients to provide them with as few or as many strategic financial services as they want or need,” Steve says.

An important piece of what Steve provides clients is risk analysis, management and mitigation. He will never forget two formative experiences he had in his career. Once, a married couple came to him for a full financial plan. Steve wanted the husband to purchase life insurance to protect his wife. The client was reluctant, but in the end, listened and did so. Twelve months later he developed brain cancer and suddenly died. Luckily, he had left his wife in a much better position than she would have been, and she is still benefiting from it to this day. Another instance also left a deep impression on Steve. In the process of working with a woman who had been a teacher for 40 years and was in the middle of her own battle with cancer, he happened to review her pension and noticed that her husband was not on it. A simple change of beneficiary became incredibly important to this husband’s future financial survival in retirement after she passed.

As Steve puts it, “My mission as a financial advisor is to leave people in a much better position than they were before they met me. I truly try to help people make better life decisions to help them reach their goals. And I believe that explaining things—educating clients in financial precepts which are often not taught anywhere—helps them stay engaged and involved in achieving financial success.”
Originally from Omaha, Steve earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from the University of Nebraska in 1992. He has over 20 years of combined experience in finance, accounting and commodity trading including six years of accounting experience in both public and private sectors.

Steve and his wife, Kim, reside in Bonner Springs, Kansas. When not working, Steve enjoys spending time with his family, including his four children, Sam, Gwen, Rob and Coleton, as well as fishing and golfing.
