Charles Smith, J.D., has been in the retirement planning industry for nearly twenty years, including the last two years at Qualified Plan Advisors (QPA). He began his career as an ERISA attorney, assisting clients with their qualified retirement and health plans. Following this, he worked over a decade at First National Bank of Omaha; leading their recordkeeping compliance department and their retirement advisory practice. He led the latter until 2021 when it was acquired by QPA. Charles is a member of QPA’s Retirement Advisory Board.

Having worked as an ERISA attorney, recordkeeper, and investment advisor, Charles is able to assist plan fiduciaries in nearly all aspects of their retirement plan; from complicated plan design issues, plan compliance and correction procedures to recordkeeping issues, vendor searches, and investment review and selection.

Charles earned his Bachelor degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1997. He then earned a Law degree from the University of Nebraska in 2001 and a Masters of Law (LL.M) in taxation from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2003. In addition to his law license and Series 65 license, he holds the CPFA (Certified Plan Fiduciary Advisor) designation.

Personally, Charles is an avid runner and has done over 30 marathons and several ultra-marathons. He also has been trying to learn to speak German for the past several years, but admits he has a long way to go. Charles enjoys spending time with his wife Debra, and their daughter Emma.
